Candle Preparation

Place a white sheet or cloth over your altar. You will need Altar Candles (tall white candles which are always on the altar, placed on the far corners and lit before any other) and Offertory Candles (the candles of symbolic colors depending on your purpose). Light some Incense, and meditate on the purpose you will use these candles for. Pick up each candle and say, "On this night, and for this rite, I bless this candle".

Rub each candle with olive Oil, then buff with a soft cloth. Take the candles one at a time and say "Creature of Wax, I exorcise you of all negativity. Be thou pure, fresh and clean as a newborn soul". If you wish, you can carve a Pentagram on each candle with your Athame. Still holding the candle say "I hereby consecrate you, creature of wax. May you ever embody the characteristics with which I am about to instill you and may you work in my service towards the aim of this sacred spell".

 

Anoint the candle with the appropriate oil. If you don't have an essential oil, then use the olive oil again. This is called Dressing the Candle. If the candle is to be used to draw a particular influence, begin at the bottom of the candle, then work your way towards the top, rubbing oil all around the circumference (to center the power at the bottom of the candle, to strengthen the draw as the candle burns down). If you wish to banish an influence with the candle, start dressing from the top and work down to the bottom, so the power pushes the influence away as it burns.

When you light the candle, light only an Altar candle with a match or lighter. Light the rest with the Altar candle. Never use your fingers to extinguish a candle. Blow it out or snuff it. Extinguish them in the same order that they were lit.
